N,N'-m-Phenylenebismaleimide is a yellow or brown powder, soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and hot acetone. As a multifunctional rubber additive, PDM can serve as a vulcanizing agent, a co-vulcanizing agent for peroxide systems, and also as an anti-scorching agent and tackifier in rubber processing. It is suitable for general-purpose rubbers as well as specialty rubbers and rubber-plastic blends. In natural rubber, when used together with sulfur, it can prevent reversion, improve heat resistance, reduce heat build-up, improve aging resistance, and enhance the adhesion between rubber and tire cord as well as the modulus of the vulcanizate. When used in rubber compounds such as shoulder compounds and breaker layers of off-the-road tires, it can solve the shoulder void problem of bias-ply heavy-duty tires; it can also be used in large-size thick natural rubber articles and various rubber sundries. As an auxiliary vulcanizing agent, it can significantly improve related properties and heat resistance, is suitable for high-temperature vulcanization systems, markedly reduces compression set, decreases the amount of peroxide required, prevents scorching during processing, and improves the adhesion of rubber compounds to tire cord and metals. N,N'-m-Phenylenebismaleimide is a sulfur-free vulcanizing agent; when used in cable rubber, it can replace all sulfur-containing vulcanizing agents such as thiazoles and thiurams, solving the problem of copper sulfide contamination and blackening caused by contact between copper conductors/copper electrical parts and sulfur-containing vulcanizing agents. Dosage: 0.5–1.0 phr as an anti-scorching agent, 2–3 phr as a vulcanizing agent, 1.5 phr for improving compression set, and 0.5–5.0 phr for improving adhesion strength.
