N-Phenylmaleimide is a yellow powder with a strong pungent odor. It is poorly soluble in water and petroleum ether, soluble in common organic solvents, and particularly readily soluble in acetone, ethyl acetate and benzene. It is mainly used as a heat-resistance modifier in polymer materials (ABS, PVC, PMMA, etc.); in the rubber industry, it is used as a crosslinking agent for polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. Adhesives made with N-phenylmaleimide can improve the adhesion between metals and rubber. It can also be used as a raw material for coatings, photosensitive resins, rubber accelerators and insulating varnishes, and is an important intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and dyes. As an excellent heat-resistance modifier for thermoplastic resins, N-phenylmaleimide has long been widely used in the development of advanced composite matrix resins and adhesives, featuring good processability, easy moldability, hot-melt behavior, toughness and impact resistance. Blending ABS with 15% N-phenylmaleimide can produce super heat-resistant ABS with a heat resistance improved by more than 35 °C. Adding 25% N-phenylmaleimide to polyvinyl chloride can raise the heat deflection temperature by 50 °C; adding 25% N-phenylmaleimide to polyvinyl acetate can raise it by more than 70 °C. Plastic alloys made from NPMI with thermoplastic resins such as polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate and polyamide can effectively improve the properties of various resins. In addition, N-phenylmaleimide is a marine organism repellent: steel products coated with a coating containing 15% N-phenylmaleimide showed no attachment of barnacles or algae after 8 months in seawater. It also has good application prospects as a broad-spectrum bactericide in the agrochemical field, and broad uses in adhesives and rubber auxiliaries.
